A Safe House
Directed by Moira Armstrong, Written by Bill Morrison, Produced by Robert Cooper and Kevin Jackson
Documentary drama about the wrongful conviction of the ‘Maguire Seven’ in the wake of the Guildford bombings of 1974.
Original transmission: BBC2 22/08/1990 (60mins). Shown as part of the ‘Screenplay’ series on BBC.
The wrongful conviction of several Irish people in England during the IRA’s bombing campaigns, shook the British justice system’s faith in itself and led to the creation of the Criminal Convictions Review Commission. These convictions also damaged British efforts to establish credibility with many Irish people and groups who had no links to the paramilitary organisations.
