Cal (John Lynch) is young man on the fringes of the republican movement in Northern Ireland. He falls in love with Marcella (Helen Mirren), who is the widow of an RUC officer who was murdered by the IRA. The story is based on the novel Cal By Bernard McLaverty. John Lynch’s first film won him a Bafta award as most promising newcomer and a Best Actress award at the Cannes Film festival for Helen Mirren.
The story tells how a young man might easily have been drawn into violence and yet afterward be consumed by guilt.
