Whenever

Whenever you’ve been
the length and breadth
of the straight and narrow;
when you’re sick of clipped privet
and that couldn’t, wouldn’t, shouldn’t
old refrain of the garden shears

—you gotta break out delta-wise.
Rip out the hedges. Cultivate
a whole new rubric. Try Amaranthus,
Oriental poppies, Liquidambar ... And while you’re at it
practise saying possible, palpable, lingual
and other such vasodilatory words. Whenever.
