The song is about opportunism in the face of adversity - people who live in border areas have always found a way to work the situation to their advantage, whether working legally as customs officials, security guards and currency dealers or earning below the radar income as smugglers or as other universal practitioners of the darker arts.

The song takes a lighter view of what was arguably one of the primary causes of the Troubles - the border.
