A parody on “The Man from the Daily Mail”, written about an RTÉ news programme in 1983 in which the reporter into the Don Tidey kidnapping could not get anyone in a Leitrim village to talk to him. This was shown on TV.
High profile kidnappings became a tactic in order to gain ransom. General government policy in the 1980s was to avoid paying ransom in case the money was used to buy arms and this could make the situation worse.
