From Drumming, 1986. This is a series of photographs taken in County Armagh during the Orange Order’s annual 12th July marches. These celebrate the ‘Battle of the Boyne’ in 1690, when the Protestant King, William of Orange (William III) defeated the Catholic King, James II.

This year there was heightened tension caused by the Anglo Irish Agreement, which large sections of the Protestant population regarded with suspicion, and ran an ‘Ulster Says No’ campaign.

Victor Sloan’s image recalls heightened tension caused by the Anglo Irish Agreement, which large sections of the Protestant population regarded with suspicion, and responded to with an ‘Ulster Says No’ campaign.
