The background is of tinted plaster slabs, intended to suggest Bavarian lithographic limestone which is famous for fossils of bird ancestors. In the slabs

Bevan shows bones, weapons and protagonists of the Troubles: Loyalists, Republicans, British soldiers, in deliberately equal presentation. I suppose that when I made this piece I felt the three forces to be in rigid stasis, with nothing evolving. In front, birds marked with Nationalist or Loyalist tokens fight and tumble
